First Keynote Speech
Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Tengku Mohd Tengku Sembok
Texts, Semantics and Artificial Intelligence in Information Retrieval
The levels-of-processing theory proposes that there are many ways to process and code information. The level of processing adopted will determine
the quality of the representation used to store the information and thus, will affect the quality of the retrieval results.
The levels-of-processing applied in information retrieval can be classified as string processing, morphological processing,
syntactic processing, semantic processing, and now generative AI processing. Conventional information retrieval models, such as
Boolean and vector space models rely on an extensive use of keywords, as independent strings, and their frequencies in storing and
retrieving information. With advances in natural language processing, and in the fields of artificial intelligence, attempts have been
made to include knowledge representation and linguistic processing into information retrieval and question-answering systems. The most
recent advancement is the application of generative AI in information retrieval and question-answering systems. Some of our work,
from text processing to semantic processing, will be revisited and concluded with generative AI.

Second Keynote Speech
Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Fauzan Noordin
Social Media from Islamic Perspective
The emergence of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has had a profound impact on every aspect of human life.
However, the designers of social media in the Western world have come to recognize the negative impact and addictive nature that these
platforms can have on users. They acknowledge that the algorithms employed by social media platforms are complex and challenging to understand
and control, often driven by commercial interests rather than the true values of life. Consequently, this has led to various issues,
including identity theft, cyberbullying, and privacy infringements. These problems arise due to the absence of proper guidance and guidelines.
As Muslims, we are encouraged to integrate the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah to address these challenges. Surah Al-Hujurat emphasizes the
importance of verifying information and avoiding defamation and suspicion. Therefore, we must use social media wisely, aligning our actions
with Islamic values to foster a healthy and positive online environment.
